Beneath the heights of Machu Picchu grows the Chuncho cocoa that has survived the passage of time in the Urubamba Valley . The ancient and sturdy Chuncho trees, some of which are 200 years old, grow at altitudes almost unheard of for growing cocoa.
Cocoa scientists believe that Chuncho may be the most richly aromatic cocoa in the world. Locals are extremely proud of their Chuncho heritage, and many families carefully harvest caacao pods from their oldest trees to turn the beans into their own chocolate.
