Haiti, an island nation located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles, occupies the western part of the island, while the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part. More than a century ago, the Dufort family began their involvement in the coffee business. They were among the largest coffee exporters in Haiti. In 1970, the company began roasting its own coffee and today operates the largest coffee roastery in Haiti. Over the years, they have worked closely with farmers and cooperatives, learning and growing together. Their commitment to quality has helped raise awareness of the value of coffee beans. With the same philosophy, the Dufort family launched a new venture in 2014 with cocoa farmers. Their goal is to enable these farmers to better recognize the value of their product, while simultaneously increasing consumer appreciation. Under the name "Produits des Iles SA (PISA)," they have established a production facility in northern Haiti, the heart of cocoa cultivation. Its location amidst the five main regions means that even the most distant plantation can be reached in a maximum of three hours by car. The network now comprises over 1,500 organic farmers, with the average plantation size being relatively small, and the largest plantation covering just one hectare. PISA supports the farmers in all aspects, from cultivation to the acquisition of new equipment. Staff members travel to the plantations six days a week to purchase fresh cocoa beans. Within a short time, PISA has been able to increase the average harvest and more than double the cocoa farmers' income.
